SHOWTIME, Dubai
Showtime Arabia is a leading pay-TV network in the Middle East and North Africa. It provides 50 channels of mainly international content, with an especially strong offering of first run Hollywood films, due to its exclusive relationships with Disney, Sony, Paramount, Universal and Dreamworks. Showtime owns and operates its own channels including The Movie Channel, TV Land, Nickelodeon, Paramount Comedy and Movietime. Included in its third party channel line-up are such global brands as MTV, CNN, Discovery, the Disney Channel, Cartoon Network and Bloomberg.
The network initially used Pebble Beach Systems to provide the automation for its Showtime Pay-TV platform in the Middle East. The facility included the Showtime headquarters and transmission center, which was the first DVB head-end project in the Middle East using Satellite technology. The primary broadcast elements included NVOD playout, a satellite system enabling 16-channel delivery over a single multiplex and the capability to introduce interactive entertainment services. Showtime has expanded its broadcast operations since its initial investment with Pebble Beach Systems. The Neptune automation system now controls 28 channels, as well as 3 sports channels. The system provides ingest, playout, browse and archive workflows and integrates to Showtime's MSA Focus traffic system.
TEUVE, Spain
Teuve is a leading provider of content and services for pay-TV in the Spanish market, selling its 12 channels and video-on-demand services through major cable operators. The broadcaster recently moved to a state-of-the-art premises and took the opportunity to upgrade their automation, archive and media management systems.
The installation took part in phases. In the first phase Pebble Beach Systems installed a new ingest system at Teuve's existing facility, integrating to new K2 HD servers. New playout operations were built at the new facility during the second phase, where a constant network connection to the original site allowed the new system to access the same database and the recently installed ingest system. The two systems were kept running in parallel until the new facility was ready for the transfer of the ingest system in the final phase. The last phase also added redundancy, where device controllers are set up as a list sync'd pair controlling unique server and GPI devices, as well as secondary VizRT graphics devices. Pebble Beach Systems plays out a total of 11 channels under Neptune automation.
RRSAT, Israel
RRSAT is one of Israel's largest providers of global content management and distribution services to the broadcast industry, offering its customers a fully managed broadcast service from automated, high capacity facilities. State-of-the-art technology provides a service that allows content to be managed and delivered for playout via studios, tapes, fibre links, internet or satellite. The facilities make use of Harris and Omneon servers, Pebble Beach Systems automation and Harmonic and Scopus encoding and multiplexing systems, delivered with unrivalled redundancy and availability levels.
In 2002 RRSAT began its operations with a low cost, entry-level Pebble Beach Systems automation solution, which perfectly fitted the needs of RRSAT at the time, whilst providing a platform that could expand their service in line with demand. The initial system consisted of just a single controller and two clients, one for ingest and one for playout. As RRSAT gained more customers, they continued to expand their automation system by adding more transmission channels. What began as a simple 3 channel system now operates over 100 channels, with multiple devices and archive integration. Throughout a 7 year expansion period, the users at RRSAT have continued to benefit from the same intuitive user interface, highly reliable, mission critical software and comprehensive media management. RRSAT currently broadcasts over 100 channels under Pebble Beach Systems automation. A total of 6 rooms equipped with broadcast devices and a Pebble Beach Systems Neptune automation system, each playout 16 channels. The systems are backed-up using Pebble Beach Systems' N+n redundancy, where the software can automatically detect failure of the main device and can utilise a spare within seconds.
